CHAPTER 28
Arturo and Conrad returned at dusk. Conrad jumped out of his Mercedes and retched.
âDear Lord, she smells like a congregation of San Francisco bums,â he hollered. âWe drove the whole way here with the windows down.â
Paul leaned and looked through the back window. In the backseat of the Mercedes slept a young woman in rags. Her blonde hair was matted, her face covered with dirt and caked blood. She was impossibly thin and pale and shivered in her sleep as if consumed by fever. Arturo said her name was Wendy. They couldn't wake her up, so they took her from the encampment without asking.
âWell, humans smell bad sometimes,â Paul said. âBut they're still humans.â
âThank you for this lesson,â Conrad scoffed. âHow interesting it wasn't you who drove her here.â Apparently, Wendy's retrieval met some protest from the local population, because Paul noticed a fresh scar on the older priest's face.
âDid she do that?â he asked.
âNo, she's powerless like a kitten,â Conrad answered grimly. He went around the Mercedes and took the first aid kit out of the glovebox. He opened it on the trunk of his car, took out some iodine and cotton buds, and proceeded to dress his wound. âDon't ask. I just hope I don't contract gangrene or some other shit.â
Glum Jerry appeared on the scene, smoking a cigar. He looked inside the car and shook his head.
âAnother one? Now this starts to look like some Jeffrey-Epstein-style of operation. Next thing I know, we get the whole Hollywood elite visiting my humble motel.â
âGive us the adjoining room, and open the connecting door,â Conrad told him.
âSure, Padre. In a jiffy.â
âWell, I must be going,â Father Arturo turned to them. âI've already extended the time I could give you. Tomorrow I'll send our brother medic to check on your guests.â
Conrad scowled. âCan't you stay the night? We need someone to guard them.â
âFather Conrad, I'm not Amen,â Arturo shook his head. âWe all have our duties. I think I have already helped you some.â
âAs was your obligation.â
âTrue. But now I must leave you on your own. You have my number. And don't hesitate to ask Jerry should you need anything.â
As Arturo drove away in his car, Paul and Conrad carried Wendy. She was so light, like a child. They moved to the open door where Jerry stood, waiting to show them the way. At one point, a family went out of the motel and stared in horror at the two priests carrying an unconscious woman. Jerry noticed that and swore under his breath. He quickly moved to the family.
âShe's sleeping!â he exclaimed. âTired from a long trip. Hey kid, want a lollipop? I have some in my office. The ninja turtles kind. Come on.â
